Pujols hitless in spring training debut

Published: March 6, 2013

Former Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols finally got on the field in spring training, taking three at-bats for the Anaheim Angels Tuesday as their designated hitter.

The results weren't pretty.

Pujols had his bat sawed off in his first plate appearance, resulting in a weak grounder to third. He struck out his next time up and in his final at-bat he grounded out to shortstop.

Fortunately for Anaheim, Pujols wasn't needed. Newly acquired slugger Josh Hamilton was 2-for-3 in the game and Pujols' replacements at first base, combined to go 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Pujols had been unable to play up to this point because he had off-season knee surgery that limited his mobility. He said he expects to be up to speed in time to play in the Angels' regular season opener.
