Belleville police are seeking charges against a driver who fled from an attempted police stop Tuesday morning before crashing his car and trying to run away on foot.
Capt. Don Sax said the man was apprehended after a short foot chase. He has not been named or fomally charged.
Officers searched the vehicle and found cannabis and a controlled substance, police said.
The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries suffered before the crash, and then transported to the St. Clair County Jail. He is being held there pending further investigation.
Sax did not say why police thought the driver refused to stop or why officers initially tried to pull him over.
The man, who was driving a black Ford Mustang GT convertible with a khaki top, lost control during a morning snowstorm and wrecked at the intersection of 17th and Marlow streets, according to police.
Other details of the case have not been revealed as police wait for formal charges to be filed.
