Don't leave Gateway out of bridge name

Published: March 7, 2013

Another name that bridge offering: How about Veterans Gateway Bridge? The name honors all veterans and recognizes our region's unique geographic distinction of Gateway to the West.

Both are worthy, impartial tributes that deserve the endorsement of both states. Together they will withstand the test of time as proper names often don't. (Anyone remember the Bernard F. Dickman Bridge?)

There are many veterans bridges around the country, and well-deserved. But ours would have the Gateway differentiation.

Interesting sidebar: Per Wikipedia, Missouri has a Veterans Memorial Bridge. It was completed in 2003, has 10 lanes and takes Route 364 across the Missouri River. It connects St. Louis and St. Charles County.
