Softball

Cougars freshman honored by OVC

EDWARDSVILLE -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville freshman Haley Chambers was named the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week after leading the softball Cougars to a 6-1 record this past week.

Chambers finished with week with a 2-0 record and did not allow a run in 14 2/3 innings of work.

The Cougar left-hander tossed complete game shutouts against Loyola and Temple. Chambers threw a three-hit shutout against Loyola and followed that with a two-hit shutout over Temple. Only one Temple batter reached base. She also provided 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief against Central Florida. Chambers struck out six batters for the week and kept her strikeout-to-walk ratio of better than 6 to 1.

SIUE, 12-6 overall, will be back in action Wednesday for its home opener. The Cougars face Missouri State in a non-conference matchup at Cougar Field. The first pitch is slated for 4 p.m.

Chambers joined Morehead State shortstop Kayla Ashbrook who was named the OVC's Player of the Week.

Men's golf

Bearcats finished sixth in tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The McKendree University men's golf team finished sixth overall at the Drury University Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at Hickory Hills Country Club in Springfield, Mo.

The Bearcats posted a 36-hole score of 663 in the event. McKendree finished 34 strokes behind tournament champion Lindenwood University. Host Drury University was the runner-up at 646, followed by Rockhurst University with a team score of 648.

McKendree junior Garrett Sneed, who was tied for third following Monday's opening round, shot a 74 on Tuesday and rallied to win individual medalist honors at the Drury Invitational. Sneed's total score of 151 was one stroke in front of Lindenwood's Oscar Isacsson for the overall championship.

Sophomore Nathan Nottrott (Collinsville) tied for 17th overall at 166, while junior Lewis Martin (St. Anthony) was tied for 23rd with a final score of 169.

McKendree will return to the links Saturday and Sunday at the University of Illinois Springfield Spring Invitational. The 36-hole event will be staged at Legends Country Club in Eureka, Mo.

Baseball

Lynx games broadcast on web

BELLEVILLE -- The upcoming Lynx baseball home games will be broadcast live through the Lindenwood-Belleville Athletics web site, it was announced Tuesday.

Wednesday's doubleheader against Brescia will debut the new schedule, as the Lynx kick off a seven-game home stand. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time.

Tom Calhoun, the director of the communications department, announced the schedule this week, which includes all home games as of this time and plans to add some road games in the future.

The broadcasts can be listened to live by clicking the headphone icon located next to each game on the baseball schedule page.

SIUE announces promotional schedule

EDWARDSVILE, -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has announced its baseball promotional schedule for the 2013 season, officials said Tuesday.

The schedule includes magnet schedule and poster giveaways. Fans also have a chance to win free food and prizes during baseball bingo days. Sundays during the season are dollar days where select concession items will be available for just $1.

On April 2, the Cougars will hold faculty/staff appreciation day. On April 5, the first 100 students receive free Cougar T-shirts courtesy of Pita Pit. On April 19, the Redstorm, the official student fan groups of SIUE athletics, will hold a bags tournament and cookout for SIUE students. On May 4 is an Eddie the Cougars' Junior E Club day with a kids T-shirt giveaway, inflatables, and a cookout.

Three Sundays during the year will be autograph days where fans can get autographs from their favorite Cougar players.

Cougars announce alumni weekend plans

EDWADSVILLE -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball program has announced plans for its 2013 Alumni Weekend. The Cougars will celebrate their alumni weekend April 19-21 during a home series against Eastern Kentucky, officials said Tuesday.

The weekend begins with the Will Bundy Baseball Golf Outing Friday at Fox Creek Golf Course in Edwardsville. Four-person team entries are available for $600. Individuals can play for $150. Entry fee includes green fees, dinner, an SIUE baseball polo shirt, beverages and access to the driving range. Prizes will be awarded for first and second place in each flight. Proceeds of the tournament will benefit SIUE's Will Bundy baseball locker room addition at Simmons Baseball Complex.

On April 19, SIUE plays host to the Eastern Kentucky Colonels at 6 p.m. in the start of the three-game Ohio Valley Conference series. The Cougars and the Colonels meet at 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

On April 20, Chad and Kathie Opel will host alumni and family at their home following the baseball game. Opel is a former All-American at SIUE.

Track and field

Cougar sprinter is recognized

EDWARDSVILLE -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville athletics has joined with Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc., to take time each week to honor a Cougar student-athlete who excels both in competition and in the classroom.

This week's honoree is women's track and field student-athlete Hilary Conrad. A junior sprinter from O'Fallon, Conrad is a community health major at SIUE and currently holds a 3.86 grade point average.

She was named to the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2011-12 school year and was voted team captain by her peers for the 2012-13 season.

"Hilary is a tremendous asset to our team," coach Kareem Jackson said. "She's one of the most coachable athletes I've ever been around, and she possesses the rare combination of dependability and durability."

A highlight from the indoor season came when Conrad ran the anchor leg of the women's 4x400 meter relay Feb. 1 at Southeast Missouri State. The junior came from behind to earn first place for the Cougars, who finished in 4 minutes, 1.37 seconds.

The SIUE track and field program will begin its outdoor season March 23 when it plays host to the Cougar Classic at Korte Stadium. Field events are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. before track events get underway at 2 p.m.

Men's lacrosse

Lynx extend winning streak to four games

BELLEVILLE -- The Lindenwood-Belleville men's lacrosse team scored a 12-6 victory over the St. Olaf Oles.

The Lynx came out and went on the attack very early, scoring a total of seven goals in the first half. Freshman goalie Andrew Kunkemueller came up with six big saves in the first half and only allowed two goals.

In the second half the Lynx didn't take their foot off the gas scoring another five goals while only giving up four. Freshman Goalie Dylan Whittingham took over in goal in the second half and tallied five saves.

Freshman Cody Trella, fresh off a recent injury, led the Lynx with three goals and two assists, on 15 shots. Cody Johnson scored three goals on nine shots, extending his streak of three plus goals to four games. Sam Stippec scored three goals and added an assist. Cody Fincher dished out three assists to go with his one goal.

With the win the Lynx move to 5-1 on the season and are currently on a four-game winning streak. The Lynx will travel to Michigan next weekend to take on Ferris State on Saturday at 12 pm and Aquinas College on Sunday at 12 pm.

Wrestling

Four Cougars place third in meet

LEXINGTON, Va. - Competing at the Southern Conference Championships for the first time in school history, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling team had four wrestlers earn third-place finishes Saturday at Cameron Hall.

Sophomore Patrick Myers (133 pounds), freshman Jake Residori (174), and juniors Josh Wood (197) and David Devine (285) all finished third in their respective weight classes.

"It was great to have four guys finish their rounds with wins," coach David Ray said. "Our guys beat opponents that they lost to earlier in the year which was great to see."

At 133, Myers defeated Campbell's Tanner Bidelspach by a 4-1 decision in the consolation final.

Residori knocked off VMI's John Dommert in the consolation final at 174 via a 4-2 decision.

Wood earned third-place honors with a 7-2 victory over Citadel's Marshall Haas in the 197 weight division.

At 285, Devine defeated Gardner-Webb's Travis Porter 8-5 to take third place honors.

SIUE finished fifth as a team with 29.5 points. Chattanooga took the SoCon Championship with 90.5 points.

Residori named to all-freshman team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestler Jake Residori was honored as a member of the All-Freshman Team by the Southern Conference (SoCon).

Residori has been a stalwart in the middle of the SIUE lineup this season, collecting 21 victories at 165 pounds and 174 pounds. He holds a 9-4 record as a 165-pounder and a 12-9 record as a 174-pounder.

He also has four pins, one technical foul, and one major decision.

Lynx coach honored with award

BELLEVILLE -- The Lindenwood-Belleville wrestling team has made some big strides in their second year of competition and that can be credited to coach Paul Collum.

Collum has been awarded with the Regional Coach of the Year award for the success of the Lynx this season. Collum will find out about the National Coach of the Year award when the committee votes after the national tournament.

The Lynx have defeated three NAIA teams -- Wayland Baptist, Bacone College, and Central Baptist College -- for the first time in school history.. At the national duals in Georgia, the Lynx took seventh place out of 24 teams.

Women's tennis

Cougar netwomen in action Saturday

EDWARDSVILLE -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's tennis team have begun to prepare for its Ohio Valley Conference schedule, which begins Saturday at Tennessee-Martin. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.

The Cougars closed its spring break trip with a victory in their last match, as they defeated Ohio Dominican 5-2 at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.

The Cougars got singles victories from Monique Krutak, Kali Donner, Sierra Halverson, and Haley Ilcewicz. All four won their matches in straight sets.

In doubles, the SIUE tandems of Halverson and Donner along with Ilcewicz and Krutak also picked up victories.

The Cougars improved to 4-7 with the victory.

Men's tennis

SIUE opens OVC play against Panthers

EDWARDSVILLE -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's tennis team has begun preparation for its Ohio Valley Conference schedule, which begins March 21 with a home match against Eastern Illinois. Competiton is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the SIUE Tennis Courts.

In their final match during the spring break and competing for the second time in as many days, SIUE suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of St. Joseph's at San Lando Park in Orlando, Fla.

Sophomore Nicolas Vincent was the lone winner for the Cougars, picking up a singles victory over the Hawks' Kevin Gates in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). With the win, Vincent improved his overall singles record to 4-3 on the year.

Marten Jonsson, Jacob Perkins, and Nico Kuehn each won the first set in their respective singles matches but were unable to secure victories.

The match was the Cougars' second and final match of their spring break trip in Orlando. The loss drops SIUE to 5-3, while St. Joseph's improves to 4-3.

Soccer

Spring identification camp canceled

EDWARDSVILLE -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer program has announced it has canceled the spring identification camp originally scheduled for March 23.

Registered players have or will be contacted by the women's soccer staff.

SIUE has three camps scheduled for later this year. Juniors camps are scheduled for May 20-22 and July 1-3 and an advanced training camp is slated for July 19-21.
