Rumor Mill: Cardinals quietly looking for a shortstop

Posted by Scott Wuerz on March 16, 2013

While St. Louis Cardinals GM John Mozeliak continues to insist that the team is "comfortable" with the team's internal options at short, the way things are shaking out seems to indicate otherwise.

The Cardinals broadcast crew on Thursday and again on Friday expressed a belief that the Redbirds will keep slugger Matt Adams on the major league roster when camp breaks, most likely at the expense of versatile infielder Ronny Cedeno.

Cedeno was supposed to be the guy who was the primary insurance policy if Rafael Furcal's elbow didn't hold up. It didn't. So now the Cardinals are going to punt Cedeno while going with a rookie? That leaved Daniel Descalso, was was penciled in as the starter at second base, as the primary back-up shortstop at the break of camp.

The Cardinals will have a rookie at short and a guy who has never played a regular season game at second base -- Matt Carpenter -- standing next to him. And we're supposed to believe that a club that's going to spend $30 million this season on its corner outfielders is going to go that cheap up the middle?

It might not be Troy Tulowitzki or Asdrubal Cabrera that the Redbirds end up with. But I have the definite sense that the St. Louis front office has something up its sleeve.

Potential trade bait includes Adams, Kosma, Shelby Miller, Eduardo Sanchez.
