Rumor Mill: Yankees interested in Matt Adams

The New York Yankees have reportedly called to ask the St. Louis Cardinals about the availability of slugging first base prospect Matt Adams.

The move came after it was discovered that New York first baseman Mark Teixeira could miss most or even all of the upcoming season thanks to his wrist injury being worse than originally thought.

The problem for the Cardinals is that they most need help at shortstop. But the Yankees aren't a good match with their starting shortstop, Derek Jeter, battling back from a broken ankle suffered in October. Even if Jeter was healthy, he's nearing the end of his Hall of Fame career, so the Yankees aren't likely to deal away their future at the position.

A check of the Yankees top prospect list reveals that it's heavy with pitchers and outfielders. While a top prospect at any position can't be discounted, those are areas of strength in the Cardinals system with outfieilder Oscar Taveras ranked St. Louis' top prospect and Shelby Miller, Trevor Rosenthal, Michael Wacha and others included in a group of highly thought of young pitchers. It just doesn't seem that there is an obvious good match for the two clubs.

As it stands, the Cardinals will apparently keep Adams on the major league roster where he'll pinch hit and play first base when starting first sacker Allen Craig needs a break or when Craig plays the outfield in place of Carlos Beltran or Matt Adams.
