Medical examiner: May take weeks to determine cause of Belleville teen's death

Published: March 20, 2013

— Police responded Sunday morning to an emergency call regarding an unresponsive teenager at the home of a former congressman's daughter, according to Shiloh Police Chief Jim Stover.

The teen, Patrick Dylan Fiore, 15, of Belleville, died Monday.

Police were called to the home of Gina Costello, daughter of former U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, at 2024 Cedarwood Trail in Shiloh at 10:43 a.m. Sunday, Stover said.

Fiore and five or six other juveniles were at the home, Stover said, who were friends and played sports together at Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville. Fiore was unresponsive and taken to Memorial Hospital in Belleville. He was later transferred to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis. He died the next day.

Fiore suffered from a seizure disorder, Stover said. A preliminary cause of death is believed to be related to that condition, Stover said.

Gina Costello could not be reached for comment.

"Everybody we have come into contact with during this investigation has provided us with the information we requested of them at the time," Stover said.

Baxter Leisure, executive assistant to the St. Louis Medical Examiner, said his office is conducting an examination.

"It may be a while until we have a cause of death," Leisure said. "It may be up to six to eight weeks."

Fiore is survived by his parents, Peter P. Fiore Jr. and Madelyn J. Lamb, and his brothers Peter Fiore III and Nicholas Fiore.

Fiore's funeral is at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Belleville.
