It's time to congratulate the overachievers in our Illinois legislature.
The House has passed a bill to limit the COLA increases in retiree benefits. What a brilliant move, at the time that age is limiting the retirees' ability to supplement their income and inflation is reducing their buying power, the state is going to reduce their income. In other words, the legislature robbed the pension accounts to fund their pet projects and now, to make restitution, they are going to rob more money from the same people.
In Washington, another hot bed of overachievers, the president is screaming about making society fair. In Illinois we are proud to set a good example. When you've robbed Peter to pay Paul, the best way to fix the problem you created is to rob Peter again.
We are proud to announce that we going to victimize the same group. After all, they represent a small voting bloc and if we keep demonizing them for following the rules, we can convince the larger voting bloc that we looking out for them.
For the legislature's next slight of hand I expect that they'll pass a law that if someone is mugged or their home is robbed, the government will charge the victim for the police, court and prison services used. After all, what's the difference? They took tax money for pensions and applied it elsewhere, why not do the same for law enforcement?
