The metro-east has a strong history of supporting our military at Scott Air Force Base, and finally that level of dedication is being recognized with the Abeline Trophy. The trophy is the Air Mobility Command's annual award to the community that is most supportive of its local Air Force base.
It's a great honor to receive it, and it's instructive. Individual communities submitted nomination packages in previous years without success. But this year the Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois presented a regional, total-package entry and finally our area won.
That regional approach will be needed as we work to keep Scott Air Force Base open and strong. Leaders from individual communities may be passionate about Scott, but by themselves they can only accomplish so much. To get additional programs or planes assigned to Scott and keep the ones we have, will take a united effort.
