Former New York Mets catcher Josh Thole, a Mater Dei High graduate from Breese, was assigned to the minor leagues Monday by the Toronto Blue Jays.
Thole was expected to be the catcher for knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, the former Mets' pitcher acquired by the Blue Jays last December in the same deal as Thole. But Thole was apparently beaten out for the backup catcher job by veteran Henry Blanco.
Thole, 26, was hitting .171 with one home run and two RBIs in 19 games with the Blue Jays this spring.
Thole was a 13th-round pick by the Mets in 2005 following his senior year at Mater Dei. In four seasons with the Mets, he hit .261 with 41 doubles, seven home runs and 87 RBIs.
He got over 350 at-bats in each of the last two seasons with the Mets, hitting .234 in 2012 with 15 doubles, one homer and 21 RBIs.
