Agents from the Metro-east Auto Theft Task Force and St. Clair County sheriff's deputies armed with a search warrant at 4:30 p.m. Monday raided Town and Country Towing in Alorton and arrested its owner.
Owner Harry "Dink" Halter was taken away in handcuffs and later booked into the St. Clair County Jail, where he remained Tuesday afternoon.
St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly would only say "my office issued a search warrant, and the investigation is ongoing."
Gary Brewer, director of the auto theft task force, would only say Halter is being held pending warrant application.
The tow yard is at 4975 Bond Ave.
According to court records, Halter was arrested on a bench warrant on Sept. 21, 2011, and later charged with official misconduct. He was an Alorton police officer when he was charged with the felony.
Court proceedings on the charge were continued 10 times in 2012 and twice so far this year.
Halter tows cars for the Village of Alorton.
