A 55-year-old Franklin man died in a fiery crash Tuesday afternoon on the Perry and Randolph County line, according to Illinois State Police.
Trooper David Sneed said Mickey E. Clayton was fatally injured in the crash that occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at County Line Road and Black Stump Road. The crash was four miles north of Willisville, near Knight Hawk Coal Mine in Percy.
Clayton, who was driving a propane tanker, struck a tractor-trailer driven by Randy E. Edwards, 48, of Pinckneyville from behind, Sneed said. He explained Edwards had stopped to make a left-hand turn and was waiting for traffic to clear when his vehicle was struck by Clayton. Edwards was not injured in the crash.
Clayton was a driver for Specialty Transport Inc. in Waverly, Ill., and Edwards works for Beelman Truck Co., according to Sneed.
The propane truck caught fire as a result of the crash, Sneed said, and two explosions occurred as several fire departments battled the blaze including Sparta, Percy and Willisville. "Fortunately, no firefighters were injured," Sneed said.
Investigators were still on the scene of the crash at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sneed said.
Illinois State Police investigated the crash with assistance from Randolph County Sheriff's Department.
Sneed said the area of County Line Road where the crash occurred sustained "extensive damage" and will need to be repaired.
