Granite City police arrested a man after a standoff Wednesday morning, after the man claimed to be armed and suicidal.
About 4 a.m., the Granite City Police Department learned of a suicidal man inside a home in the 2200 block of Delmar. Police spoke with the man over the telephone and learned he claimed to have weapons and explosives, according to a news release from Assistant Chief of Police Maj. Jeff Connor.
Several nearby homes were evacuated.
The Granite City Special Response Team and the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System members were activated and took over negotiations.
During negotiations, the man exited the home onto the roof of the front porch. He remained there for several hours armed with a knife, Connor said.
About 10:45 a.m., the man re-entered the home through the window and was taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital, Connor said.
The bomb squad was called to the home to inspect it, Connor said.
