The group Citizens Against District 90 Tax Increases announced Friday that it has withdrawn from participating in a forum just days before the event scheduled to debate the O'Fallon District 90 Referendum.
The referendum on the April 9 ballot seeks a property tax increase. The district is asking voters for a 49-cent increase, bringing the education fund rate from $1.40 to $1.89.
A forum to present sides for those in favor of the referendum and those opposed to it is scheduled for Tuesday. The event is sponsored by the United Congregations of the Metro-East.
The group against the increase issued the following statement: "The cad90.com group agreed to take part in a forum to present a 'discourse that will help citizens make an informed decision regarding the tax increase referendum on the Apr. 9 ballot.' Unfortunately, there was little to no coordination with the participants and the stated purpose of the forum has now become distorted and altered. Considering the censorship of what is being allowed to be presented by the participants, and even the restrictions on types of questions that may be asked by the audience, the public will be ill-served by the forum as it now is structured."
The forum about O'Fallon District 90's referendum will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the New Life in Christ Interdenominational Church at 689 Scott Troy Road in O'Fallon.
