SIUE competes at Carbondale
EDWARDSVILLE -- After opening the outdoor season at home last weekend, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's and women's track and field teams will head to SIU Carbondale this weekend for the Bill Cornell Spring Classic.
Competition resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Salukis' Lew Hartzog Track Complex.
"This will be a good opportunity for us," coach Kareem Jackson said. "It's a heated rivalry anytime we get to compete against Carbondale, and there's going to be great competition in all event areas. We're excited about getting there and seeing our kids compete."
The Cougars kicked off outdoor competition last weekend at the Cougar Classic at Korte Stadium, and saw several school records fall.
On the women's side, Elizabeth Hampl set a new school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 184 feet, 10 inches, breaking the previous mark of 181-4 set by Carrie Glover in 2006.
Jatavia Wright also rewrote the record book, breaking her own school record in the long jump with a leap of 19-4.25.
For the men, Ahmad Evans set a new program best in the 200 meters with a time of 21.17 seconds, while Darius Smith broke the school record in the 100 meters with a finish of 10.54.
Other Ohio Valley Conference schools competing in this weekend's meet include Murray State, Eastern Illinois, and Southeast Missouri.
SIUE teams will play at Belmont
EDWARDSVILLE --The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's and women's tennis teams will head for Nashville this weekend for a pair of Ohio Valley Conference matches at Tennessee State and Belmont.
The Cougars will be taking on Belmont Saturday at 10 a.m.
On the women's side, SIUE comes into the weekend with a 6-9 record overall and a 2-2 mark in the OVC. The Cougars split a pair of conference matches last weekend, defeating Austin Peay 5-2 Friday but falling to Murray State by the same score Sunday.
Freshmen Monique Krutak and McKenzie Thomas both went 2-0 in singles play to lead the Cougars.
The SIUE men currently sit at 6-4 overall and 1-1 in conference. They also split against Austin Peay and Murray State last weekend, falling to the Govs but defeating the Racers 4-3.
Freshman Nico Kuehn currently leads the squad with a 7-2 singles record in dual matches.
Sophomore honored as student-athlete
EDWARDSVILLE-- Southern Illinois University Edwardssville athletics has joined with Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc., to take time each week to honor a Cougar student-athlete who excels both in competition and in the classroom.
This week's honoree is women's tennis student-athlete Haley Ilcewicz. A sophomore from Lockport, Ilcewicz is a pharmacy major at SIUE and currently holds a 3.93 grade point average. She was named to the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2011-12 school year.
"Haley's dedication in the classroom is a great example to young players looking to compete at the NCAA Division I level," coach Jason Coomer said. "Her ability to balance academics and athletics are to be commended."
Ilcewicz has been one of the Cougars' best players since OVC play began two weeks ago. She has won three of four conference singles matches, and has teamed with freshman Monique Krutak to go 8-1 as a doubles pair.
