If you knew my beloved, dearly departed wife Linda, you knew she saved everything -- especially if she thought I would have an interest in it.
I ran across a March 26, 2009, O'Fallon Progress with the top fold headline being, "District 90 to cut 80 jobs." There was the proud, smiling face of the School Board President John Coers.
The reduction in force (RIF) was referred to as "Board slashes $1.68 million from 2010 fiscal budget." Sounds pretty impressive until you actually look at the numbers.
The following comes directly from the Illinois State Board of Education web site:
Year Educational Fund Salaries Educational Fund Fringes
2008-2009 $14,320,489 $ 3,324,603
2009-2010 $15,299,001 $ 3,730,041
2010-2011 $15,387,998 $3,878,014
2011-2012 $15,596,260 $3,995,357
So when you see headlines that "school slashes budget" or "reduction in force" headlines, ignore them. Apparently, the RIF motions that are passed by the board or just for show, nobody is going to actually decrease teachers or salary expense.
