Boy, letter writer H. Ray Sigler sure hit the nail on the head with his letter about the Catholic Church and real Christianity on March 22. I am so tired of all this media hype about the worship of the new pope. I know the Catholic News-Democrat news- paper always overdoes it on the Catholic news but enough is enough already.
Give us rest of story
Please finish the story you did so well on the carpal tunnel disaster at the Chester prison. Has anybody been charged? Have any of the doctors who signed the papers been questioned? That was less than an honorable deed on their part.
Swansea Trustee candidate Brian Wells has fought for chickens in every Swansea back yard and video gambling in every Swansea strip mall. Instead of focusing on things that might hurt Swansea, Wells should have been spending his time negotiating the sewer agreement with the township. He has had four years to complete the negotiations but has failed. Please vote Wells out.
Was TIF violated?
We've been waiting for several months for Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert to tell us what he's doing about the TIF money he gave to Wagner Buick. Is he going to ask for it back? Did Wagner violate the terms of the TIF agreement by selling his business? It's our money and we want to know what is being done about it.
Tax dollars at work
Bellevillians who are concerned about Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert's cavalier spending habits should drive down West Main Street and observe the parking lot between South 9th South 10th streets. This lot cost many hundreds of thousands of dollars and it's generally empty. Send Eckert a message on Election Day.
Stay with status quo
As near as I can figure from the mayoral debate in Belleville, none of them have the business acumen, the education, or the ability to handle the finances of a city the size of Belleville. However, it appears that candidate Phil Elmore doesn't even know when he's shooting himself in the foot. Mayor Mark Eckert has a very astute businessman and attorney backing him up. So we should keep the devil we have over a devil we don't know.
Vote out Eckert
Has anyone noticed how much of the current Belleville mayor's record is dotted with mistakes or wrong guesses on BelAir Bowl, the Anglers Club, the Turner building, Meredith Home, the hole in the ground on East Main Street? Don't we need someone who actually plans ahead instead of just guessing wrong when a problem comes up? I have to vote for someone else and I hope other residents will, too.
A good idea but ...
I applaud your newspaper for streaming he mayoral debate in Belleville. Unfortunately the stream kept cutting off or pausing so you couldn't hear the answers to the questions in a lot of cases. In the future if you want us to participate, you will have to make it worth our while.
Brace for scare tactics
Wait for the scare tactics now about how all the bridges are going to fall down and the roads are going to crumble underneath our cars just so they can raise the taxes on gasoline by a penny or two. What happened to the tax money on all the gallons we bought in the last 10 years?
I'm calling regarding the newspaper article about Patrick Fiore having a seizure and passing away at the home of former U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello's daughter. I don't understand the purpose of reporting that it happened there and believe the BND was only looking for a story. Do you have no compassion for the family who lost that boy or consider how that story would make the family feel? I am friends with both the Costellos and the Fiores and can't imagine why that was newsworthy.
Good job on snow
What a wonderful job the Belleville Street Department did during the recent snow storm. Many accolades to the workers.
Track was there first
To the caller who complained in Sound-off about the auto races on Friday nights at Belle-Clair racetrack, I would like to point out that the track was there long before he bought his house. He knew it was there, so quit crying.
Happy with no-knock
I have lived in O'Fallon for the past 25 years and since the city has instituted the "no knock" policy (this is like the no call list), I have not been bothered by solicitors or peddlers. I have not seen them on the street, probably because all of my neighbors also signed up for the list. I am very proud of the city administrators for instituting such a policy in our fine city. My daughter lives in Missouri and is currently getting her city to begin the same policy. Life is just so much more comfortable without the continual bombardment of peddlers.
Something to hide?
I heard that St. Clair County Clerk Bob Delaney is refusing to allow anyone to come into the clerk's office who isn't working there, including County Board Chairman Mark Kern. What's Bob trying to hide before this election?
No place for politics
It's terribly sad when a senior resident of Caseyville goes in to pay her water bill and is harassed by the clerk behind the counter about whose campaign sign she has in her yard.
The language barrier
At first I was heartened to see that a father of five won the big Powerball Lottery until he opened his mouth. After 26 years in this country, he couldn't speak a word of English. That is disrespectful to the country that allowed his dreams to come true. After 26 years, there is absolutely no excuse not to be able to speak at least broken English and needing a translator at his lottery win press conference.
The Casino Queen is supposedly the home of the loosest slots. But since it has become employee-owned, the scope of gambling has changed dramatically. Before, certain tables were $2 minimum, now they are $3 and will be bumped to $5 very quickly. Now that the state has OK'd video poker, it is hurting casinos all over the state, especially the Casino Queen. Now the Queen is squeezing nickels into quarters at the expense of its loyal customers. There a lot of empty tables and machines and thanks to the state allowing video poker, this trend will continue.
Let landlords do work
I agree with letter writer Lillian Schneider that Belleville should stay out of the rental business. I am a renter and the landlords need to be more responsible about their buildings and the people they rent to. They need to make necessary repairs to keep their properties up and they need to check backgrounds of renters instead of just renting to anyone who has the money.
Lacking in leadership
The Caseyville Khoury League operated for almost 50 years teaching Caseyville area kids baseball and good sportsmanship. Then Caseyville Village Clerk candidate Rob Watt, his wife and brother-in-law took over as managers. They had fundraisers, accepted private donations and operated the concession stand. Soon the ball fields and building fell into disrepair, the facility was closed, and the uniforms and ball equipment were left behind to rot on the floor. Now, sadly, there is no Caseyville Khoury League.
Stay within borders
Caseyville Township Highway Commissioner Dale Black needs to figure out the boundaries of the road district. During the last snow, township trucks were seen clearing and salting a church parking lot in Caseyville. His crew has also been seen trimming trees in Fairview Heights and picking up big trash items in Caseyville. Both Caseyville and Fairview Heights have their own crews that are hired to do these tasks. The township road district needs to stay in the township and take care of its own roads.
Upset by urn picture
I was amazed that anyone would have the nerve to put a big urn on your Lifestyle page. Just to think that someone's loved one is in that urn, you may as well have used a casket, it's the same thing. It was horrible. You have hurt so many people who have lost their loved ones. You should think twice before you do something that horrible again.
The enemy is us
The United States has the worst longevity record for men of any country. Our average life span is in the low 70s. The rate for women is also very bad. It's not about health care. We have the biggest health care delivery system in the world, even without Obamacare. It's us. The contributing factor is obesity. We have more heart attacks, more diabetes and more kidney failure and other related illnesses than any other country. So we really are No. 1, huh? Our fast food is high in fat, cholesterol and salt, so next time you buy a pork chop with gravy or a sandwich loaded with bacon, just remember you are committing suicide.
Gambling litmus test
If you believe that video gambling will be a good thing for Swansea's family-friendly atmosphere, vote for Brian Wells, Matt Lanter and Brian McGuire. If you want to stop video gambling from changing the nature of Swansea, vote for Susan Schultz, Jeff King, Bill Phillips and Katherine Ruocco.
Obama is like Lincoln
The movie "Lincoln" received all kinds of accolades. Part of the success was the accuracy and framework of the film which depicted a president under fire by radicals from all sides. Am I the only one who can see the parallel to our current president? Both presidents are trying to end wars and correct social evils that seem insurmountable and both sides are being attacked from outside and inside their party over things that are inconsequential. I think everyone needs to do a great deal of soul searching before criticizing.
How crazy is this cap?
Legislation is being introduced in Illinois to cap teachers pensions at $100,000 a year. Yes, $100,000. Can you imagine this kind of a pension for a teacher who works only nine months out of the year? No cap is mentioned for school administrators pensions or their assistants. I keep reading in the editorials that teachers have a good deal; I would call it a racket. I am sick of hearing Teacher's whine about how tough they have it.
Why there's no name
I often read letters in the BND in which the writers are bad-mouthing people who write anonymous letters. What these simple-minded people fail to realize is these people choose to remain anonymous for fear of being harassed over the telephone about letters they have written. I know this is true because it happened to me. I was tired of being challenged on the opinions in my writings, so I opted to go underground. Besides, the only reason most people like to sign their names to their writings is to boost their ego.
I am tired of reading political advertisements in the letters section of the BND by persons who are running for various political offices. If you want to campaign for yourself, send out mailings or pay for a political ad in the BND. Leave the editorial section for people who have editorials to publish.
