AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Lindenwood University-Belleville Lynx kicked off the week in Florida with a doubleheader sweep over Thomas (Maine) by the scores of 13-1 and 13-2.
The Lynx (10-14) outscored the Terriers (1-10) 26-3, recording 31 hits and seven extra-base hits, hitting .525 as team. Christian Cavaness led the offense, going 4-for-5 with a triple, seven RBIs and four runs scored.
Joe Phelps, Derek Cox and Ethan Haake took the mound on Tuesday, holding Thomas to a .280 batting average and combining for a 2.25 ERA on the day. The trio struck out 13 Terriers, while walking only one.
The Lynx got off to a good start, combining for three runs off four hits in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead in the opener.
The Lynx were back at it in the top of the second, scoring nine runs in the inning -- a season-high for the LU-Belleville.
Thomas put up its lone run of the game in the bottom of the second, trailing 12-1. The Lynx scored one more in the fourth, and with an 11-run lead they ended the game in a run-rule victory after five innings, 13-1.
In the second game, it was more of the same.
The Lynx were the first to score in game two, grabbing an early 1-0 lead over Thomas.
From there, the LU-Belleville offense exploded as the Lynx scored in the first four innings, including a six-run performance in the bottom of the third. The Terriers were able to squeeze out two runs in the fifth inning, but the Lynx picked up the doubleheader sweep with a win in game two.
Cox (3-4) got the win, throwing 5 innings allowing only two runs off five hits, no walks and struck out four batters. Cox tallied 24 strikes through his first 30 pitches thrown against the Terriers. Haake came in to relieve, throwing the final two innings to strike out four of the seven batters he faced.
Following Tuesday's offensive showcase in the first series in Florida, the Lynx now have seven players batting over .300 on the season.
LU-Belleville will be back in action Wednesday, playing Southeastern (Fla.) in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. CDT.
