For all who still haven't made up their mind about the mayoral race in Belleville, I ask you the following:
First, if you were lucky enough to be at the debate, you heard Phil Elmore drop the "F" bomb. How mayoral was that?
If you listened to Joe Hayden's mumbling and reading of letters and comments the mayor made in years past, take heed. For all that Alderman Hayden says and promises, can he make it happen? Being mayor is not a one-man band. You still have to work with and depend on the City Council to help in your endeavors.
We see that it's commonplace and easy for challengers to say they will bring change. This, to me, is a roundabout way of saying we really don't know what we are going to do for you and you don't either.
On the other hand the incumbent, in this case Mayor Mark Eckert, must run on his record. Let's look at some of that record. He has brought two new shopping centers, opened 17th Street, and if you don't love downtown, you are living in a cave.
Tax increment financing is complicated and I can't begin to explain it, but here's what I know about our city. The snow was cleared, the trash is picked up, we have a plan in place for crime-free housing and plans in place for the future.
Vote for Mayor Eckert on Tuesday and keep Belleville moving forward.
