Former Cardinals IF Tyler Greene signs with White Sox

The Chicago White Sox report that they have signed former St. Louis Cardinals infielder Tyler Greene to a minor league contract and that he has been assigned to their Class AAA affiliate.

Greene, who most recently was with the Houston Astros, lost his job in spring training when the Cardinals released shortstop Ronny Cedeno. Houston signed Cedeno and named him their starting shortstop then released Greene.

A .224 career hitter, Greene had his best year in 2012 when he hit .230 with 11 home runs split between St. Louis and Houston. He also stole 12 bases.

Greene was known while with the Cardinals for long periods of listless play punctuated by periods of brilliance. Apparently he showed enough to former St. Louis front office type Jeff Luhnow enough to take a shot with him. But Greene has failed to find consistency in the field and to hit well enough to stick in the big leagues.
