FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS — The U.S. Marshal Task Force on Wednesday night arrested a 27-year-old man at the Trailways Inn who was wanted in Des Moines, Iowa, on a sexual assault charge.
Anthony Keith Joiner, who police said lived in Des Moines as of September 2012, is accused of sexually assaulting an unnamed female victim on May 2, 2012.
Des Moines Police Sgt. Jason Halifax said police reports allege that Joiner "put a knife to a girl's neck, threatened and then drug her under some bushes and raped her."
Halifax was not certain when Joiner fled the Des Moines area "but it was not long after" the alleged incident, he said.
U. S. Marshal Don Slaznik said his agents worked with Fairview Heights Police and together arrested Joiner at about 8 p.m. Wednesday.
"We arrested him at Trailways Inn. Fairview Heights called us and we worked with them to make the arrest," Slaznik said.
"The task force staked out the room and they saw the guy go in the room and come back out. The agents called Fairview Heights, and while they were on their way to Trailways Inn, the suspect was arrested," Slaznik said.
A female, who was believed to be with Joiner, was arrested by the Fairview Heights Police at the St. Clair Square mall, Slaznik said.
Joiner was being held Friday at the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department.
He has several prior arrests including drug arrests in 2005 and 2006, a domestic abuse arrest in 2007, a couple of domestic abuse arrests in 2010, and in 2011, he was arrested for violating an order of protection.
His companion, Kimberly Rose Sparrow, 18, who used the Trailways Inn address of 10039 Lincoln Trails, is currently being held at the St. Clair County Jail. She was charged with unlawful use of a credit card and obstructing identification. Bail for her was set at $20,0000. Sparrow also has an outstanding warrant for her arrest from the Oak County Sheriff's Department in Iowa.
