Did a Stookey Township employee fill up his personal vehicle at the road district's pump? A resident said yes; Highway Commissioner Chad Davis said no.
The alleged offense happened a month ago but is just being reported, so this could all be political as Davis claims. Davis is running for re-election.
But there's no written record to determine one way or the other, and that's the real problem.
Even Davis admits he could do a better job of keeping track of fuel use.
All government entities with fuel pumps need to keep tight control over them so that every gallon can be accounted for. Not doing so creates the potential to lose a lot of gas and tax dollars at the pump.
With tight controls, employees would be protected from allegations of wrongdoing and the taxpayers won't be left wondering if their resources are being used correctly.
