Voter turnout wavered between 13 and 21 percent in Tuesday's municipal election in East St. Louis, Belleville and Madison County, according to the unofficial results of the contests.
In Belleville, about 24 percent of registered voters cast a ballot. Belleville results did not include all absentee ballots as of press time.
Voter turnout in East St. Louis, which has its own election board, was about 13 percent.
In Madison County, County Clerk Debra Ming-Mendoza said about 19 percent of registered voters cast a ballot. Ming-Mendoza said turnout was higher than she expected because of "several hotly contested races."
Voters' enthusiasm was expected to be lower than in the November election, which featured the presidential election and had a voter turnout of more than 64 percent.
