The Pastoral Plan for Parish Renewal and Restructuring for the Diocese of Belleville indicates that St. Luke Parish would be looking to close.
As of now the inner city parishes of the diocese of Belleville are all clustered (that is they share pastors) and it appears that has been working fine. However, St. Luke and St. Teresa parishes, which have been successfully clustered for some time, are directed to: "Upon the recommendation of the committee, the bishop directs these parishes to begin working together now to develop a strategic pastoral model by which they will become one parish and be able to be served by only one priest. Time frame: A draft of the strategic pastoral model is due by Dec. 31, 2013."
St. Luke is a viable parish with committed parishioners who give time, talent and treasure generously and in the spirit of real Christianity. It has been said by many including other pastors that St. Luke is a model parish.
Sister Grace Mueller, Parish Life Coordinator of St. Luke, serves St. Luke's and the Belleville community tirelessly and unselfishly. We need such a presence in the Belleville community.
Do the parishioners of St. Luke know that they have rights? The only thing for injustice to continue is that good committed people do nothing.
If you do not like this directive, please make it known to Bishop Edward K. Braxton and the Belleville News-Democrat.
