Residents of Belleville Township High School District 201 will not see an increase on their tax bills this year.
The District 201 school board approved another property tax abatement at its meeting Monday night. Assistant Superintendent Brian Mentzer explained that the value of property within the district dropped to $1.596 billion this school year from $1.653 billion. This decrease, he said, would have raised the district's overall tax rate by about 3 cents. But the school board decided to abate property taxes for the second time this spring, keeping taxes level.
Mentzer said the district will be using money in the bond and interest fund to pay down some of the district's outstanding bonds. "This will allow us to maintain the exact same tax rate as last year," he said.
