Belleville considers changes to deal to redevelop old YMCA

News-DemocratApril 18, 2013

A special Belleville meeting is scheduled for Thursday so city leaders could discuss amending an agreement to redevelop the old YMCA.

A joint meeting of the aldermanic Finance and Economic Development & Annexation committees will start at 5 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 101 S. Illinois St.

The development agreement with Colee LLC for the building at 15 N. First St. is the only item on the agenda.

In March, the City Council approved an agreement that would give out $210,000 in tax increment financing funds for the project, among other incentives.

In return, Charles Kurt Artinger will rehabilitate the building and move his Swansea-based business, Replacement Services LLC, to the site.

Artinger has said previous bids showed it will cost up to $800,000 to fix parts of the building and he plans to invest $500,000 on the first phase to bring 13,000 square feet of the facility up to code within nine months.

The original Belleville Turner Hall has been vacant and deteriorating since 2006 when the YMCA moved to its current downtown location.
