Take-back drug event set April 27 in Fairview Heights

News-DemocratApril 18, 2013

The Fairview Heights Police Department is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Adminstration to collect expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 in the Center Court of the St. Clair Square Mall or the Fairview Heights Police Department at 10027 Bunkum Road. The medications will be properly disposed of, and the service is free and anonymous.

Last September, Americans turned in 244 tons of prescription drugs at over 5,200 take-back sites operated by the DEA and local law enforcement agencies.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Disposing of unused medicines by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose safety and health hazards.
