States and feds disagree on the authority to name the new Mississippi River bridge; Musial and veterans are monikers being debated. The bridge should be named Veterans Memorial Bridge. As for the federal effort to name the bridge after Stan Musial, state Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Belleville, thinks their actions are largely ceremonial. If wrong he stands to be corrected.
Missouri should be more for naming the new bridge after the veterans. That state has the largest military cemetery, Jefferson Barracks. Those miles of white crosses mean something to a lot of families and this country. Men and women gave their lives for us to have freedom and democracy, and don't forget about the veterans who are physically or mentally disabled and scarred for life from the outcome of war.
You talk about the Cardinal Nation; what about the veterans nation? They should come first. Veterans probably have been deprived of good health care and benefits due to them and their families. Work tirelessly to pass a bill or law for them.
It's not like Stan Musial was a Navy Seal or was on the front line dodging bullets. He was a great baseball player, a World War II veteran.
Hopefully, President Obama will make the final decision on naming the bridge with the U.S. House and Senate for the veterans.
