Fundraising is priority of Congress

April 22, 2013

If only lawmakers were as good at legislating as they are at fundraising.

The first months of the new Congress will be remembered mainly for what lawmakers didn't do. They let sequestration and across-the-board spending cuts go into effect rather than make hard choices about prioritizing spending.

Oh, but they've been much more successful at filling their campaign coffers. The House Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has raised $22.6 million so far in 2013, and the National Republican Congressional Committee $17.5 million. In our area, Rep. Rodney Davis has raised $403,555; Rep. Bill Enyart $191,432 and Rep. John Shimkus, $203,224.

They're working hard for the 2014 elections, but how about focusing on the job they were recently elected to do?
