Gas station altercation may have led to Belleville man's homicide

A 38-year-old Belleville man was shot at 9:30 p.m. Sunday near the Mobil gas station at 83rd and State Street and later died, becoming the city's fifth homicide victim this year.

James Sparks was identified as the victim by St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone. He died at 10:25 p.m. Sunday at in the Memorial Hospital emergency room from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police were called about shots being fired and a man down at 617 N. 84th St., East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore said. When they arrived officers found the victim and learned he had been shot multiple times.

Floore said Sparks and the unidentified gunman got into some sort of altercation at the gas station. Shortly after the fight the victim was shot, just down the street from gas station.

Police did not recover the gun, nor have they identified the gunman. Floore said police need the public's help.

East St. Louis police investigators were back on the street Monday morning looking for evidence and witnesses.
