— Security police cordoned off and evacuated Building 1700, a communications building, briefly Wednesday afternoon after the discovery of a "suspicious" envelope outside the building.

An examination of the envelope showed it did not pose a threat, said Karen Pettit, a spokeswoman for the 375th Air Mobility Wing, which oversees the air base near Belleville.

The base command post was notified of the suspicious envelope about 2:30 p.m. Security police and an explosive disposal team arrived at the scene soon after, resulting in the evacuation of the building, which houses communications personnel, Pettit said.

The all-clear signal was given about 4 p.m., she said.
