Police have a 22-year-old East St. Louis suspect in custody who they say shot and killed another 22-year-year-old East St. Louis man.

East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore said police were dispatched to Building 10 in the John DeShields Housing complex to investigate a shooting Tuesday evening at 6:29 p.m.

When they arrived on scene, they found the body of Keison Mitchell, of 947 Goelz Drive in East St. Louis.

"The shooter fled the scene, but he later turned himself in to East St. Louis Police," he said.

Floore did not release the shooter's identity pending charges, but he said he is currently at the St. Clair County jail.

Floore said the shooter and victim got into an argument at the victim's ex-girlfriend's apartment in the John DeShield's.

"The current boyfriend and Mitchell argued and it spilled to the outside where the current boyfriend shot the ex-boyfriend in the chest," Floore said.

Police did recover a .380 hand gun, which they believe is the weapon that was used in the shooting.

The victim's mother Frankie Mitchell said, "I am glad the shooter is locked up. I want justice for my son. But there is still more surrounding the incident," said Frankie Mitchell, the victim's mother.

Keison Mitchell has a two-year-old son by the unnamed girlfriend.

Charges could come as early as today. Floore said Mitchell is the sixth homicide victim for the city this year.
