Pirates hit four home runs, blast Cardinals in series finale

— Russell Martin clubbed two home runs and Jeff Tabata and Garrett Jones also homered Sunday afternoon as the Pittsburgh Pirates ripped the St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 at Busch Stadium to take two out of three in the series.

How it went

Martin connected against Shelby Miller for his fourth homer of the season to make it 1-0 in the second. Tabata homered against Miller, his first of the season, to make it 2-0 in the fifth. Jones hit his second homer of the season, against Fernando Salas, to make it 4-0 in the seventh. Martin homered again in a five-run ninth, a two-run shot against Mark Rzepczynski, to make it 9-0. John McDonald had an RBI double in the sixth against Salas and Pedro Alvarez had a two-run single in the ninth against Rzepczynski, runs that were charged to Mitchell Boggs.

Miller (3-2) threw 113 pitches in 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (earned) on seven hits. He walked three and struck out seven. ... Pirates left-hander Jeff Locke (3-1) blanked the Cardinals on three hits through seven innings --singles by Holliday in the first, Pete Kozma in the fifth and Allen Craig in the sixth. Locke had two walks and four strikeouts. ... Boggs allowed three ninth-inning runs as his ERA climbed to 12.66. ... Craig has a team-high 18 RBIs, but he has gone 136 regular-season at-bats without a home run. ... St. Louis' bullpen ERA is 5.93. ... Kozma has a seven-game hitting streak.
