ST. LOUIS — Marc Rzepczynski was optioned to Class AAA Memphis on Monday by the St. Louis Cardinals, who purchased the contract of right-hander Seth Maness from Class AAA Memphis.
Maness (pronounced MAY-niss), 24, was the Cardinals' Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2012. He will wear No. 61 when the Cardinals begin a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.
Maness was 2-2 with a 4.32 ERA in four starts at Memphis this season, striking out 18 and walking three in 25 innings. He was an 11th-round draft pick in the 2011 draft from East Carolina University.
The 6-foot, 190-pounder is known for impeccable control. He has walked just 18 batters in 247 2/3 professional innings.
The left-handed Rzepczynski was 0-0 with a 7.88 ERA in nine games this season.made nine appearances this season, with three walks and eight strikeouts in eight innings.
The loss of Rzepczynski means the Cardinals are back down to one left-hander in the bullpen. Randy Choate has thrown just 3 1/3 innings in eight games.
Rzepczynski allowed two runs in one-third of an inning Sunday in the Cardinals' 9-0 loss to Pittsburgh. Rzepczynski was 1-3 with a 4.24 ERA in 70 games last season. He joined the Cardinals in 2011 in the trade that sent Colby Rasmus to Toronto.
