Investigation: Stairs may be to blame in O'Fallon woman's death

The Major Case Squad on Monday continued to investigate the death of a woman over the weekend in O'Fallon.

Police identified the deceased as 40-year-old Taffy R. Caradona-Stewart. She was found at the bottom of a staircase in the home and had not been shot or stabbed, according to police.

O'Fallon Police made a well-being check on Caradona-Stewart at 10:46 a.m. Saturday at her home at 1301 Engle Court, according to O'Fallon Police Capt. Jeff Wild.

A friend of Caradona-Smith told police he had visited her Friday evening; when he attempted to reach her again Saturday morning, he was unable to get in touch with her at her home or by phone, so he called police.

"We found the doors all secure from the outside and had to call a locksmith to let us in," Wild said. "We discovered Ms. Caradona-Stewart at the bottom of the stairs where it appears she had fallen."

Wild said Caradona-Smith was living at the home by herself.

By Sunday afternoon, the department had called on the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis for assistance in the investigation.

"Some of the original suspicions have been eliminated and we continue to follow some other potential avenues at this point," Wild explained.
