Beltran battling flu, will not start against Cincinnati on Monday

News-DemocratApril 29, 2013

— Right fielder Carlos Beltran is battling the flu and will not start for the St. Louis Cardinals when they play Cincinnati at 7:15 p.m. Monday at Busch Stadium.

Beltran was replaced after six innings Sunday, replaced by Shane Robinson. Allen Craig is in right field Monday, with Ty Wigginton playing first base against Reds right-hander Mat Latos (1-0, 2.16 ERA).

It's Wigginton's first start of the season at first base and just his third start overall. His other two were as a third baseman.

"Today, he feels better," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny of Beltran, batting .289 with six home runs and 17 RBIs. "He's just weak."

Matheny said Beltran "probably" could be used as a pinch-hitter in a late-game situation.

Adam Wainwright (4-1, 1.93) will start for St. Louis. Wainwright has walked just one batter in 37 1/3 innings. The Reds are one of only four teams against whom Wainwright has a losing record (4-6). The other three are San Francisco, the New York Mets and Toronto.
