A Belleville man riding his motorized bike to work in Millstadt was killed when he lost control of the bike and was hit by a car in Smithton early Tuesday.

John Fudge, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Clair County Deputy Coroner Dean Darnall at 6:18 a.m. Fudge had just turned from Illinois 159 onto Douglas Road toward Millstadt when he lost control of the bike, fell off and was run over by an oncoming vehicle headed in the opposite direction, Darnall said.

Police were called by a passing motorist who found Fudge in the road after losing control of his bike about 5:30 a.m. As the witness was calling for help, the oncoming car struck and killed him.

The bike was described as a regular bicycle with a motor attached to it.

"From what his brother said, he rode it to work every day," Darnall added.

Fudge worked in construction.

The accident remains under investigation by the Smithton Police. No one has been cited or charged in connection with the accident and police indicated charges are not expected.
