SWANSEA — Police rushed to the scene of a robbery at the Gateway Metro Credit Union on Tuesday afternoon.
Police received a call at 3:53 p.m. reporting that two men walked into the business and held it up at gunpoint, said Police Chief Mike Arnold.
The caller gave police a description of the getaway car and Belleville police spotted a car matching that description and gave chase, Arnold said.
The car crashed at South 33rd Street and railroad tracks in Belleville.
One suspect was apprehended, Arnold said. The other remained at large, as of 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Late Tuesday afternoon, Illinois State Police crime scene technician and Swansea police were at the credit union that is in the Schnucks Swansea Plaza, just off Illinois 159. A hand-printed closed sign was taped to the front door.
The FBI was notified of the bank robbery, Arnold said.
