St. Louis Cardinals send Mitchell Boggs to minors, Carlos Martinez called to big leagues

The Cardinals finally made the inevitable move this morning and sent Mitchell Boggs to Class AAA Memphis to straighten out his mess.

The more intriguing element of the transaction is that Carlos Martinez, one of the team's top three pitching prospects, has been promoted to St. Louis to replace the veteran Boggs.

Martinez, 21, was in Class AA Springfield where he had compiled a 1-0 record with a 2.31 ERA. He pitched only 11 2/3 innings after missing all of spring training with visa problems. Martinez allowed 11 hits during his time in Class AA and struck out nine while walking one.

The Cardinals had no choice but to send Boggs to the minors after a monumentally disastrous first month of the season. In 10 2/3 innings pitched, Boggs allowed 17 hits and 12 walks for a walks and hits per innings pitched ratio 2.719. I can't recall ever seeing a WHIP that bad for a pitcher who'd made more than one or two appearances.
