A 17-year-old Granite City man has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a 13-year-old Wednesday night.

LaRoyce Montez McFadden of 1937 Benton was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm Friday by Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons.

McFadden is in police custody and held without bond. He was arrested Thursday and remains in custody of the Granite City Police. He will be taken to the Madison County Jail Friday night.

McFadden is accused firing the bullet that killed Clayton Veninga, 13, at 9:25 p.m. Wednesday while he and a friend were sitting on a friend's porch at 2012 Cleveland. Clayton and his friend, identified only as "Tootie," and Tootie's mother ran after the shooting and Clayton collapsed in puddle in a nearby driveway.

Clayton was taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
