Babe Champion to speak at Belleville sports group meeting

Retired Granite City High School Hall of Fame baseball coach Conrad "Babe" Champion will be the guest speaker on Friday for the Belleville Area Senior Men's Sports Group.

Champion's topic will be "Memories" at the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. meeting at the PSOP (Programs and Services for Older Persons) building at 201 N. Church St., in Belleville.

Anyone interested in attending the event is urged to make reservations by calling 234-4410, ext. 7016.

A member of the 1948 Granite City team that defeated New Athens, 4-1, for the Illinois state baseball championship, Champion is a founding committee member and charter member of the Granite City Warriors Hall of Fame. A former professional baseball scout, he also was a major college football official and a referee on the prep and collegiate basketball levels.
