WASHINGTON PARK — Prosecutors have charged a 56-year-old man accused of breaking into a 62-year-old woman's apartment and biting her while he was naked and holding a hammer and crack pipe.
Ronald McGruder, of 1523 N. 48th St. in Washington Park, was charged on Friday by the St. Clair County State's Attorney's office with aggravated battery bodily harm/60 plus, aggravated battery/bodily harm, unlawful restraint and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
The victim told police she had gone outside Wednesday evening to retrieve her dog.
When she went back into her apartment in the 5100 block of North Park Drive, she was confronted by the suspect who was coming out of her bathroom holding a hammer and a crack pipe.
"The male subject grabbed her and began biting her about the body. She fought her way loose and was able to get outside and lock the iron gate on her door to keep the suspect inside," Police Chief Dave Clark said.
"We found the unclothed suspect locked inside of the victim's apartment," Clark said.
Police arrested McGruder on the spot.
Clark said the woman sustained several bites during her struggle with the suspect and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
