Federal Court

Thursday, May 2

Corey A. Cotton, 33, of East St. Louis, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis to 71 months in prison on one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon, according to Stephen R. Wigginton, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.

Cotton, who previously pleaded guilty on Dec. 14, also agreed to the forfeiture of the firearm. The charges stem from a Sept. 27, 2011, incident when Cotton sped away from law enforcement officials after a traffic stop in East St. Louis. After fleeing the vehicle, he discarded a firearm in a wooded area, which was recovered by pursuing police.
