SAUGET — The Gateway Grizzlies continued their 2013 spring training workouts Monday at GCS Ballpark in getting ready for their preseason opener.
Manager Phil Warren's team will have had five workouts before the first preseason game on Tuesday on the road against the Southern Illinois Miners. First pitch for the Grizzlies exhibition opener of the 2013 preseason is set for 10:05 at Rent One Park.
The Grizzlies first home preseason game is Wednesday at 11:35 a.m., also against the Miners.
After missing out on the playoffs for three straight seasons, the Grizzlies were able to taste postseason baseball once again in 2012. Warren's ballclub compiled a record of 57-39, winning the second most games in franchise history.
The Grizzlies entered spring training with 34 players on their roster. The roster must be trimmed to 24 players before the regular season opener, per league rules.
Gateway capped off their preseason signings last week, inking St. Louis native Dustin Smith, the son of former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop, Ozzie Smith. Widely considered the best defensive shortstop to ever play the game, Ozzie was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2002. Ozzie is a 15-time All-Star and a recipient of 13 Gold Gloves. He won the World Series with the Cardinals in 1982.
The Grizzlies 2013 regular season home opener is May 21 when they take on the Joliet Slammers in the friendly confines of GCS Ballpark. Single game, season and group tickets are on sale now. For more information call 618-337-3000.
