EDWARDSVILLE — The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball celebrated its 2012-2013 season recently at the annual postseason awards banquet held at Crystal Garden Banquet and Event Center.
The night featured a highlight video as well as addresses from SIUE coach Lennox Forrester and Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt.
The team recognized its four seniors, Reggie Reed, Zeke Schneider, Derian Shaffer and Mark Yelovich. Each student-athlete was presented with a framed jersey representing their time as a Cougar. Yelovich also spoke on behalf of the senior class.
"It was a great night to recognize our players and acknowledge all of the hard work they have done to continue to improve our program," Forrester said. "It was especially important to recognize our four seniors and the sacrifices they have made to build our basketball program."
Forrester and the coaching staff also presented several end-of-the-year awards:
Sophomore Michael Messer was given the free throw award for achieving the highest free throw percentage for the season. Messer was 74 of 89 (.831) for the year from the free throw line. Sophomore Kris Davis earned the three-point award. He was 39 of 118 (.331) from three-point range. Reed was honored as the Defensive Player of the year. Yelovich earned the rebounding award after grabbing 129 rebounds (5.9 per game) and also was chosen as the team's Most Valuable Player.
Shaffer was given the Gerry Schlemer Cougar Spirit Award, for exemplifying the spirit of SIUE athletics. Cougar season ticket holders Ron and Alice Gray were honored with the Sixth Man Award for their continued support of SIUE men's basketball.
"We also got a chance to recognize our administration and all of our supporters," Forrester added. "Without their support everything we achieve on and off the floor would not be possible."
Yelovich was presented with the Matthew Yelovich Memorial Scholarship, which is named for his late brother who was killed in an automobile accident in 2008, Mark's freshman year. Mark's father Mike presented the scholarship on behalf of the Yelovich family.
