MARION — Alex Guthrie collected three hits but it wasn't enough to help Gateway Grizzlies in their preseason opener Tuesday morning.
The Grizzlies fell 3-2 in 10 innings to the the Southern Illinois Miners at Rent One Park.
Gateway continues preseason play Wednedsay when they take on the Miners in the friendly confines of GCS Ballpark in the exhibition home opener. The first pitch is set for 11:35 a.m.
St. Louis native Tim Brown is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Grizzlies.
Guthrie, a returner from the 2012 Grizzlies, picked up three singles, a walk and an RBI. Jonathan Johnson, a college teammate of Guthrie's at Loyola Marymount, also excelled at the plate, collecting two singles and an RBI. Gateway compiled 10 hits as a team.
Starting pitcher Chris Enourato started the Grizzlies off on a good note with two hitless innings, recording five ground ball outs.
Mike Jefferson and Brett Kennedy pitched two scoreless innings, while Tucker Jensen struck out three in two innings.
Jimmy Howick suffered the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings.
After falling behind 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Grizzlies picked up all of their offense in the seventh. Johnson and Dustin Smith collected RBI singles to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead.
Southern Illinois scored unanswered runs in the ninth and 10th inning to pick up the win.
