Kudos to James A. Crosby, David Griffith, Michelle Hagberg, Lee Harris, Phil Henning, Gerry Schutzenhofer and Richard Wagner for identifying themselves when giving their opinions in the Sunday BND. Also, kudos to the BND for providing the forum.
However, FireDogLake, sentinel, WinnerLo, Cooll, NumberoneGarcan, bishopour, feisty, JD2S and dustpilot, anonymous commenters on A5, seemed to be ashamed of owning what they said. Also, the BND appears to be quite anxious to sell its papers by aiding and abetting the above-ashamed owners.
Three years ago, columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. opinioned, "Anonymity brings out the worst." Google for his complete column.
He encouraged us to see the message boards of pretty much any papers. "Or just wade into the nearest cesspool. The experiences are equivalent."
He continued, "Make them leave their names. Stop giving people a way to throw rocks and hide their hands. Any dropoff in the quantity of message board postings will surely be made up in the quality thereof."
Pitts ended with, "That's my opinion. If you don't like it, well, at least you know who to blame."
I hope future BND anonymity is deemed to be written carelessly and also ignored by its readers. It is further hoped that BND ask its owner McClatchy to look for stockholder support to terminate this anonymity procedure that could have a negative bottom-line effect.
This letter is my opinion and if you don't like it, at least you know Bob DesPain is the one to blame.
