At last, a voice of reason on Scott

May 11, 2013

It was good to hear from the voice of reason in the form of Sen. Mark Kirk, with reassurances that Scott Air Force Base is safe from any future BRAC cuts. Hopefully that will go a long way to counter the BND's recent incendiary Sunday headline, "Could Congress close Scott?"

Could a meteor strike the Arch in St. Louis? Could the state of Illinois balance its budget? It's possible but highly unlikely.

I wasn't here for much of the local posturing leading up to the BRAC announcement of base closures and realignments in 2005, but suspect this sky-is-falling mentality existed and centered on the pet rock of that time, MidAmerica Airport. We all know how that turned out.

I just hope new pet rocks, like development of the Interstate 64 interchange at Rieder Road, don't emerge this time around that are billed as necessary to "save" Scott. What we don't need is a bunch of overzealous lifeguards racing into the churning surf to save a swimmer who's really not in distress.
