EDWARDSVILLE — Southern Illinois University Edwardsville first baseman Joel Greatting, a Columbia High graduate, has been named baseball Co-Player of the Week by the Ohio Valley Conference.
Greatting was 10-19 (.526) for the week in which the Cougars were 3-2. SIUE enjoyed an extra-inning home win over Indiana State last Tuesday and won two of three games in a nonconference weekend series at Conference USA leader Southern Miss.
Greatting is SIUE's leading hitter at .339 through 47 games with eight doubles, seven home runs and 33 RBIs. He also has 23 walks and has scored 32 runs.
The senior led the Cougars in average, hits, total bases (18), slugging (.947), and on-base percentage (.591) this weekend. He was 4-for-6 with four RBIs in the Cougars' come-from-behind 12-inning win over the Sycamores Tuesday.
Greatting tied the game 6-6 with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth that sent the game to extra innings. He tied the game again (8-8) in the bottom of the 11th with an RBI single to send the game to the 12th inning.
Over the weekend, he got the Cougars started with a first inning home run in each of the first two games at Southern Mississippi. Greatting was 3-for-5 with the homer and three RBIs in Friday night's win. He was 2-for-3 with the homer and three RBIs in Saturday' win.
Greatting shared the award with Austin Peay's Craig Massoni.
The Cougars conclude their 2013 season with a Wednesday home game against Evansville and a weekend series at Austin Peay.
