Grizzlies seek trombonists for game

— The Gateway Grizzlies are calling all trombonists to participate in the world's largest trombone ensemble at GCS Ballpark on May 25.

The trombonists will gather before the Grizzlies play the Schaumburg Boomers at 7:05 p.m. that night. The goal is to make a mark in the Guinness Book of World Records by executing the largest trombone ensemble ever. The current record is 368 and the Grizzlies' are looking to reach 400.

Among the participants will be three generations of Sauget's. Rich Sauget Sr. (Grizzlies Managing Officer), Rich Sauget Jr. (Mayer of Sauget) and Trey Sauget (Grandson of Rich Sauget Sr. and son of Rich Sauget Jr.) will all play their trombones at the game as part of the ensemble.

Preseason games

The Grizzlies concluded preseason play with a 3-2 win over the River City Rascals on Saturday at GCS Ballpark to conclude preseason play. L.J Watson doubled in Vladimir Frias for the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning.

Gateway's first run came in the bottom of the second inning. Outfielder Jon Myers hit a solo home run to left field. It was one of three homers the teams combined to hit to left Saturday.

During the top of the next inning River City DH Eric Williams walked and eventually scored to tie the game at one. The Rascals took the lead in the fourth when catcher Andrew Edge hit a solo shot to left field making it 2-1.

Frias led off the eighth with a solo homer to left to tie the game at two.

Myers and Frias led the Grizzlies offensively with two hits a piece.

Left-hander Gregg Downing started the game for Gateway. He threw two hitless innings and struck out two. Tucker Jensen, Chris Pfau, Dan Eaton, and Chris Bear also had scoreless outings.

Gateway's first-year rookie Wes Edwards gave up both of River City's runs during the third and fourth innings.

The Grizzlies will open the regular season Friday with a road series against the Lake Erie Crusher in Avon, Ohio.

The home opener is scheduled for May 21 at 7:05 p.m. against the Joliet Slammers.
